COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & SLUM SANITATION

Mumbai, a city of about 13 million has roughly 5.5 million people living in the 'slums'. Due to its rapid and continuing growth, the city faces tremendous and complex problems, including inadequate sanitary facilities in the slums where only about 30% of the toilets are functioning,the garbage removal is inadequate, and where surface water gutters are often filled with fowl,stagnant water, garbage and mosquito larvae.


In order to improve the situation in these slums a slum sanitation and community development project was taken up by PHE Consultants in association with M/s. R.V. Anderson Associates ltd the project was funded by the Canadian international Development Agency (CIDA). The projectwas implemented with success and developed a spirit of participation and involvement of the members in improving their living environment. Some of the achievements of this project were:


Community Development
  • Establishment of working partnership, in which all contributing to the project's
    success;
  • Increased familiarity between key municipal and NGO employees, which is fosteringgreater trust, co-operation, and ultimately a better living environment in these communities.
  • A broader cross-section of people participating in these activities than being a one sided corporation initiative lacking popular support or involvement.
Community Education
  • Camps and workshops were organized for residents, Which has introduced participants to the benefits of community participation and by use of group participation activities such as group participation tools and public participation tools, while stimulating them to becomeinvolved in community sanitation.
  • Greater awareness of sanitation issues, especially amongst children through the use of a children's science group.

Sanitation Services
  • Establishment of active community groups that are pursuing sanitation issues such as the women's toilet committee, young men's groups and young women's groups in different areas
  • Increased confidence amongst residents to pursue issues of concern to them, asdemonstrated by women organizing for improved toilet maintenance in Shivaji Nagar.
  • Demolition of unusable communal toilets and construction of new toilets
Pilot Projects
  • Pilot projects by mutual agreement with the communities of Malvani and Shivaji Nagar focused at enabling the communities to have effective control over t6he financing,construction , operation and maintenance of facilities so as to serve the sanitation needsof all elements of the communities , in particular women and children, but also men, the various cultural and economic sectors.
